In the hot, chaotic streets of Beirut, Zain, a boy of about ten, runs away from a family unable to protect him. All he carries with him are a fierce anger, a precocious lucidity, and the unshakable conviction that he deserves a better life. Left to fend for himself, he meets Rahil, an Ethiopian migrant, and her baby Yonas. Together, these three almost invisible lives form a fragile bond, united by shared vulnerability and spontaneous solidarity.

Through this unlikely encounter, Capernaum reveals an extraordinary instinct for survival: a hope born from tiny gestures—a child’s laughter, a shared bowl of food, a bond forged in silence. Despite the violence of the world around him, Zain becomes protective, inventive, almost heroic, transforming his wandering into a quest for dignity.

When the film opens on a trial in which a child prosecutes his parents for bringing him into the world, the initial provocation quickly gives way to profound humanity. He seeks not vengeance, but recognition—to have his suffering acknowledged, to be heard, and perhaps to secure a future.

With quiet tenderness, Capernaum shows how, even in the midst of chaos, a child can find unexpected inner strength to dream, to act, and to love. Bathed in a gentle, insistent compassion, the film becomes a deeply moving work, illuminated by a hopeful light that lingers long after the credits roll.
