Les Valseuses (Version restaurée)

Thematic
By Bertrand Blier
With Gérard Depardieu, Patrick Dewaere, Miou-Miou
France, 1974

Provocative and unrestrained, this film sparked scandal upon its release. Seeking to capture the spirit of liberation in May 1968, Bertrand Blier stirred controversy by first publishing his eponymous novel and later adapting it into a film. A French-style road movie, Les Valseuses follows the misadventures of two petty criminals, Jean-Claude (Gérard Depardieu) and Pierrot (Patrick Dewaere), as they drag Marie-Ange (Miou-Miou) along on their picaresque journey. With its explicit sex scenes, raw dialogue, and overtly 1970s-era misogyny, one might question whether such a film could still be made today.
